【Summary】
ʿImād al-Dīn Maḥmūd Shīrāzī, son of Rukn al-Dīn Masʿūd (d. 984 A.H.), was one of the most prolific and distinguished physicians of Iran in the 10th century A.H. He played a major role in expanding the use of Persian as a scholarly language in medicine, pharmacology, and related disciplines, authoring numerous works in these fields.
Risālah-yi Sammīyah (Treatise on Toxicology) was composed at the request of Murtażā-Qulī Khān Parnāk Turkmān, the governor of Mashhad. The work is structured with an introduction and five chapters, systematically addressing various types of poisons, including those that are ingested, drunk, applied externally, worn, or encountered through other means.
In addition to discussing toxic substances, the treatise provides detailed accounts of harmful and venomous animals, methods for repelling dangerous creatures, and medical treatments for bites and stings caused by poisonous animals. The work reflects a sophisticated integration of toxicology, zoology, and therapeutic practice within the tradition of Persian medical literature.
