【Summary】

Afḏal al-Tavārīkh is a comprehensive historical chronicle composed by Fażlī Khūzānī Iṣfahānī, a secretary and fiscal administrator of the Safavid period. The author traces Safavid history from the era of Shaykh Ṣafī al-Dīn Isḥāq Ardabīlī (650–735 A.H.) through the major political and administrative developments of the dynasty up to the end of the reign of Shāh ʿAbbās I. The work is organized in three volumes, of which the present book constitutes the first part of the second volume.

This volume is devoted to the reign and life of Shāh Ṭahmāsb I (930–984 A.H.) and is distinguished by its verbatim citation of royal decrees, legal rulings, and official correspondence, alongside detailed narratives of contemporary events. Particularly noteworthy are the author’s discussions of Shah Ṭahmāsb’s repentance and religious transformation, the formulation of principles of governance, and the increasing involvement of jurists in state administration.

The text has been edited and established on the basis of a manuscript preserved in the British Museum (London), no. 4678, copied in Shaʿbān 1049 A.H., making this edition a reliable primary source for the study of Safavid political, religious, and administrative history.
