【Summary】

al-Riḥla al-Makkiyya was originally authored by Sayyid ʿAlī Khān Mushshaʿī, ruler (wālī) of Ḥuwayza in 1112 A.H. and again in 1127–1128 A.H. It belongs to the genre of local histories of Khuzestan and offers a detailed account of the Mushshaʿi dynasty, tracing the lives and reigns of its rulers from the establishment of the dynasty (845 A.H.) up to the author’s own time (1128 A.H.).

The present volume is a Persian translation of the Arabic original, produced during the reign of Fatḥ-ʿAlī Shāh Qājār (r. 1212–1250 A.H.) by order of Muḥammad ʿAlī Mīrzā Qājār and carried out by Nūr al-Dīn Muḥammad Jazāʾirī. The translator—son of the renowned scholar Sayyid Niʿmat Allāh Jazāʾirī (d. ca. 1238 A.H.)—began this work in 1233 A.H. under his father’s supervision.

Although certain valuable passages of the original Arabic text were omitted in the translation (these sections have been restored by the editor as appendices), the translator’s additions significantly enhance the work. As a result, the availability of the Arabic original does not diminish the scholarly value of this Persian version, which remains an essential source for the political and social history of the Mushshaʿis and the broader history of Khuzestan.
