【Summary】

Mabāḥith al-Sulṭānīyah, also known as al-Sulṭānīyah fī Marātib al-Nubuwwah, constitutes the third book in Rashid al-Din’s corpus of theological and doctrinal writings collectively known as the Rashidiyya. Rashid al-Din—physician, historian, statesman, and vizier to three Ilkhanid rulers—devoted a substantial portion of his intellectual output to questions of Qurʾanic theology, prophecy, and religious authority.

Unlike a collection of separate treatises, this work is structured as a unified composition consisting of a main text and an appendix. The opening section praises the virtues and moral excellence of the Ilkhanid ruler Oljeitu, situating political authority within a sacred framework. The core text is organized into a preface, introduction, thematic chapters, and conclusion. Its central discussions address inspiration and revelation, miracles, prophethood, messengership, the ranks of major prophets, and the finality of prophecy. The concluding section examines cosmological origin, eschatology, and the eternal fate of the inhabitants of paradise.

The appendix includes lists of prophets, caliphs, and scholars, genealogical tables of prophetic and caliphal lineages, as well as the supplementary treatise Nafāʾis al-Afkār. This work is a key source for understanding Ilkhanid religious thought and Rashid al-Din’s attempt to harmonize theology, reason, and political legitimacy.
