【Summary】

Bāqir Khurda Kāshānī was a gifted poet and accomplished calligrapher from Kāshān, active during the late tenth and early eleventh centuries A.H. In addition to poetry and calligraphy, he possessed notable expertise in Qurʾānic recitation and tajwīd. In his youth, he affiliated with the Nuqṭavī movement, an association that led to his imprisonment. Following his release, he spent several years traveling in Khurāsān and Iraq before migrating to India, where he died in Burhānpur in 1038 A.H. and was buried there.

Bāqir’s poetic style belongs to the ṭarz-i tāza (“new manner”), later known as the Indian style (sabk-i hindī). This stylistic current, initiated by Bābā Fighānī and advanced by poets such as Thanāʾī, ʿUrfī, and Naẓīrī, reached its culmination with Kalīm and Ṣāʾib. Bāqir occupies a crucial position in this lineage, serving as a formative link that prepared the ground for later masters.

His ghazals reveal a transitional aesthetic that bridges the Iraqi style and the Iranian branch of the Indian style. They simultaneously preserve elements reminiscent of Ḥāfiẓ’s lyricism while anticipating stylistic features that would later be perfected by Ṣāʾib. The present volume offers a critical edition of Bāqir Khurda Kāshānī’s ghazals and constitutes an important resource for the study of the evolution of Persian lyric poetry.
