【Summary】
This volume presents a critical edition, analysis, and study of two sixth-century A.H. Persian treatises on prosody: Risālah dar ʿArūż by Masʿūd b. Aḥmad Sayfī Nīshābūrī and Minhāj al-ʿArūż by Anvarī Abīvardī. These works constitute the earliest known independent treatises devoted exclusively to Persian prosody.
Both texts are based on the method of Yūsuf ʿArūżī, regarded as the founder of Persian prosodic theory. Although this system gradually fell out of use, the reports preserved in these treatises are of exceptional importance for reconstructing the early history of Persian metrics and tracing the transmission and influence of Yūsuf ʿArūżī’s approach up to the mid-eighth century A.H.
The publication of Minhāj al-ʿArūż is particularly significant, as it makes available the only known prose work by Anvarī, one of the most celebrated Persian poets of the sixth century A.H., none of whose prose writings had previously been identified.
