【Summary】
One of the most important and widely used mathematical texts of the Islamic period in spherical geometry is al-Ukar (Spherics), originally composed in Greek by Theodosius of Bithynia (ca. 160–90 BCE). The work contains foundational propositions of spherical geometry and was translated into Arabic in the third century A.H.
In the seventh century A.H., Naṣīr al-Dīn Ṭūsī produced a systematic redaction (taḥrīr) of the Arabic translation of al-Ukar, alongside similar treatments of other major mathematical and astronomical texts. Ṭūsī’s precise, clear, and pedagogically effective redaction ensured the enduring popularity of the work and led to the composition of numerous marginal glosses and commentaries.
The present volume offers a critical edition of Ṭūsī’s Taḥrīr al-Ukar, accompanied by a Persian translation and a mathematical explanation. The introduction discusses the content and significance of al-Ukar, its transmission in Greek and Islamic contexts, the distinctive features of Ṭūsī’s redaction, the surviving manuscripts, and the editorial methodology adopted in this edition.
