【Summary】

The Topkapı Palace manuscript “Khazīnah 1653” is the earliest surviving Persian copy of Rashīd al-Dīn Faḍl Allāh Hamadānī’s Jāmiʿ al-Tawārīkh, copied in 714 A.H. Approximately a century later, after parts of the manuscript had been lost, it entered the possession of the Timurid ruler Shāhrukh.

Shāhrukh commissioned his court historian, Ḥāfiẓ Abrū, to complete the manuscript. In the process, Ḥāfiẓ Abrū introduced significant changes, most notably replacing the pre-Islamic section of Jāmiʿ al-Tawārīkh with the first volume of his own Majmaʿ al-Tawārīkh. This replacement section was copied in 829 A.H.

The present study traces the history of the manuscript’s movement from the Rabʿ-i Rashīdī to the Topkapı Palace Library and offers a detailed analysis of its illustrations. By examining stylistic features, iconography, and historical context, the book sheds light on the continuity and transformation of illustrated historiography from the Ilkhanid to the Timurid period.
