【Summary】

The Gaukhoda Library of Banaras Hindu University in India is one of the country’s major academic libraries and preserves 937 manuscript volumes, some of which consist of composite collections. These manuscripts were donated to the university by Lal Sri Nam as a legacy from Delhi.

The subjects represented in this collection are remarkably diverse, encompassing lexicography, philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, astrology, chemistry, medicine, calligraphy, literature (both poetry and prose), literary history, Iranian history, the history of the Mughal dynasty in India, Indian geography, Sufism, ethics, and Persian translations of selected Sanskrit texts.

The catalogue was compiled by Dr. Amrit Lal Madhuk Ishrat (1930–1989), a scholar trained in Persian studies at the University of Tehran and the founder of the Department of Persian at Banaras Hindu University. His work constitutes the first systematic catalogue of the Persian manuscript holdings of the Gaukhoda Library and represents a foundational reference for Persian manuscript studies in South Asia.
