【Summary】
Silk al-Jawāhir is a versified Persian lexicon composed by ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Angūrī in 757 A.H. The work was written in conscious imitation of two influential didactic dictionaries in verse: Niṣāb al-Ṣibyān by Abū Naṣr Farāhī and Naṣīb al-Fityān by Ḥisām al-Dīn Khūʾī.
Following a prose introduction, the lexicon is arranged into thirty-five poetic sections, each designed to facilitate memorization and language instruction. As a result, the work belongs to the pedagogical tradition of Persian verse dictionaries widely used in medieval educational contexts.
ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd Angūrī was an active and prolific author. His other known works include Multamisāt (a versified petition written in 758 A.H.), Munyat al-Wāʿiẓīn wa Ghunyat al-Muttaʿiẓīn on ethics (763 A.H.), as well as al-Muʿashshirāt and al-Mukhammisāt, both devoted to Prophetic ḥadīth.
The present edition has been established through critical methods based on ten early and reliable manuscript witnesses, offering the first scholarly, sound text of this important lexicographical poem.
