【Summary】
Tārīkh-i Rustam-Khān Sipahsālār-i Gurjī, authored by Bījan (known as Tārīkh-i Ṣafavī-khvān), is one of the most important biographical-historical works of the Safavid period. The work is devoted to the life and career of Rustam Khan, the Georgian, a member of the Saakadze family, and offers a detailed account of his political, military, and judicial activities, including his tenure as dīvān-begī.
After converting to Islam, Rustam Khan first entered the service of Shah ʿAbbās I. During the reign of Shah Ṣafī, he rose to the rank of commander-in-chief (sipahsālār). Ultimately, at the beginning of the reign of Shah ʿAbbās II, he fell victim to court intrigues and, under the influence of the minister Sārū Taqī, was executed in 1053 A.H. The chronicle provides valuable firsthand insight into Safavid court politics, military administration, and the precarious position of Georgian elites within the Safavid power structure.
