Original Title: Zarandīyah: risālah-yi tanz-i intiqādī dar bārah-yi akhdh-i māliyāt az teryāk dar dawrah-yi Qājār
A satirical-critical treatise from the late Qajar period exposing corruption in the taxation of opium, written in imitation of ʿUbayd Zākānī’s satirical style.
Zarandīyah is a satirical treatise written in the mode of parody and in conscious imitation of the style of ʿUbayd Zākānī, particularly his famous Mūsh u Gurbah. The work was composed at the end of the Qajar era by Asad Allāh Yamīn Isfandiyārī, a high-ranking official from the prominent Isfandiyārī family of Māzandarān.
The treatise adopts a sharply critical tone to address the financial corruption of officials responsible for collecting opium taxes in Zarand, a town in the northern regions of the province of Kerman. Historically, the text belongs to a period when the Qajar dynasty, weakened by severe economic and political crises following the First World War, was entering its final phase of decline. As such, Zarandīyah offers valuable insight into late Qajar administrative practices, social criticism, and the continued vitality of classical Persian satire in a modern historical context.
