【Summary】

The author of Rustam al-Tavārīkh introduces himself as Mīrzā Muḥammad Hāshim, using the pen name Āṣif and known as Rustam al-Ḥukamā, son of Amīr Muḥammad Ḥasan Khūsh-Ḥikāyat and a descendant of prominent families. Yet, beyond his own statements, no independent historical evidence has been found to confirm this identity.

In addition to Rustam al-Tavārīkh, three other works attributed to him have been published: Dāstān-i Suʾāl va Javāb-i Ḥakīmāna, Shams al-Anvār, and Tārīkh-i Dār al-ʿIrfān-i Khamsa.
Based on a detailed analysis of textual, historical, and biographical evidence, the present study argues that Rustam al-Ḥukamā was a concealed name used by Reżā-Qolī Khān Hidāyat (b. 15 Muḥarram 1215 A.H.; d. 1288 A.H.).

Reżā-Qolī Khān Hidāyat held numerous important positions, including shahna of Shiraz, Poet Laureate of Iran (Amīr al-Shuʿarāʾ), and tutor to two Qajar princes. He was sent on a diplomatic mission to Khwarazm by Amīr Kabīr and later served as administrator and head of the Dār al-Funūn, as well as deputy minister of sciences. Among his well-known published works are Fihrist al-Tavārīkh, Rawżat al-Ṣafā-yi Nāṣirī, Majmaʿ al-Fuṣaḥāʾ, Riyāż al-ʿĀrifīn, and the Safārat-nāma-yi Khwārazm. This book thus sheds new light on the authorship of Rustam al-Tavārīkh and offers a reassessment of its intellectual and national outlook.
