【Summary】

The name of Ḥātim al-Ṭāʾī appears frequently in Persian poetry, prose narratives, and proverbial literature, and numerous anecdotes about his generosity are scattered throughout historical and literary texts. Risāla-yi Ḥātimiyya, however, is the first work written independently in Persian to focus exclusively on the life and legends of Ḥātim al-Ṭāʾī.

The treatise was composed in 891 A.H. by Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī Bīhaqī, known as Kāshifī, at the request of Sulṭān Ḥusayn Bāyqarā. Written in a fluent and refined Persian prose, the work presents a coherent narrative of Ḥātim’s life and moral exempla. One of its particularly noteworthy features is the attention paid to the role of women in the stories and episodes associated with Ḥātim.

The present critical edition has been established on the basis of several manuscript witnesses. The editor has supplemented the text with a substantial introduction and detailed annotations, including references to the sources of the anecdotes and verses cited in the treatise.
