【Summary】

Ḍiyāʾ al-Shihāb is a Persian commentary on Shihāb al-Akhbār, the well-known collection of prophetic traditions compiled by Qāḍī al-Quḍāʿī. The commentary was most likely written in the seventh century A.H. by an anonymous scholar whose identity remains unknown. Internal evidence suggests that the commentator was a Sunni scholar with considerable expertise in ḥadīth studies.

From a technical standpoint, this commentary displays clear advantages over the three other Persian translations and commentaries on Shihāb al-Akhbār that have appeared in print to date. In addition, Ḍiyāʾ al-Shihāb is of particular linguistic importance due to its preservation of archaic and occasionally rare Persian vocabulary and grammatical structures.

The present critical edition is based on the only known manuscript of the work, jointly owned by Ḥasan ʿĀṭifī and ʿAbbās Behnīyā, and has been prepared through the collaborative scholarly efforts of the three editors.
