【Summary】

Mirʾāt al-Adwār wa Marqāt al-Akhbār is a major universal history written by Muṣliḥ al-Dīn Muḥammad Lārī, one of the prominent scholars and theologians of the tenth century A.H. The work begins with the creation of the world and Adam, and continues chronologically until the year 974 A.H., near the end of the author’s lifetime.

The book consists of an introduction and ten chapters, covering the origin of creation; the prophets from the beginning to the time of Noah; the Pīshdādian and Kayānian dynasties and their prophets and sages; the Sasanian period; the rise of Islam and the lives of the Rightly Guided Caliphs; the Abbasid rulers; the emergence of Chinggis Khan; the career of Amir Timur; the history of Ḥasan Beg and his descendants; and finally the Ottoman dynasty.

Stylistically, the prose is predominantly scholastic and heavily influenced by Arabic models. The prefaces tend toward ornate and artificial prose, occasionally shifting—when appropriate—into rhythmic and rhymed (sajʿ) composition, reflecting the learned historiographical conventions of its time.
