【Summary】

The Covenant of Malik al-Ashtar is a celebrated letter written by Imam ʿAli ibn Abi Talib to Malik al-Ashtar al-Nakhaʿi upon his appointment as governor of Egypt. Preserved in Nahj al-Balāghah, it is the longest and most comprehensive epistle in the collection and addresses the ethical, social, judicial, and administrative foundations of governance.

This volume presents one of the finest Persian translations of the covenant, produced by Muḥammad Ibrāhīm Badāyiʿ-Negār Tehrānī, whose prose is widely regarded as a masterpiece of late Qajar-era Persian writing. Alongside the edited text, the book includes a contemporary manuscript copy dated 1297 A.H., offering valuable insight into the transmission and reception of the text in nineteenth-century Iran.
