【Summary】
al-Ufuq al-Mubīn is the most comprehensive and ambitious philosophical work of Amīr Muḥammad Bāqir Astarābādī, widely known as Mīr Dāmād, a central figure of the Safavid philosophical revival and a leading representative of the School of Isfahan. According to written authorizations preserved from Mīr Dāmād and addressed to his distinguished student and son-in-law Amīr Sayyid Aḥmad ʿAlawī, this work was taught directly by the author, attracting students from Iran and the Indian subcontinent.
The treatise was originally conceived as a two-part work (ṣarḥa). All extant manuscripts preserve only the first part, which is devoted to general metaphysical principles (al-umūr al-ʿāmma). The second part, intended to address divine and theological matters, appears to have been planned but has not survived.
As a systematic exposition of metaphysics integrating Avicennan philosophy, illuminationist elements, and Mīr Dāmād’s own innovative doctrines—most notably his theory of perpetual origination (ḥudūth dahrī)—al-Ufuq al-Mubīn stands as a cornerstone of early modern Islamic philosophy and a foundational text for subsequent generations of Shiʿi philosophers.
