【Summary】
Tadhkirat-i Nishtar-i ʿIshq is a monumental biographical dictionary of Persian poets composed by Ḥusayn-Qulī Khān ʿAẓīmābādī, known by the pen name ʿĀshiqī, one of the final great figures of the tazkira-writing tradition in the Indian subcontinent. A Twelver Shiʿi intellectual, the author began compiling this work in 1224 A.H., drawing upon thirty-two principal sources, and completed it in 1233 A.H.
The work contains biographical notices and selected love poetry of 1,432 poets, ranging from early masters of Persian verse to the author’s contemporaries. Written in refined and elegant prose, the tazkira reflects both critical discernment and a deep familiarity with the Persian literary canon as it evolved in South Asia.
The present critical edition is based on the most authoritative manuscript, collated against six additional copies. Variant readings are recorded in the footnotes, while extensive annotations and supplementary materials provide bibliographical references and clarifications concerning the poets discussed. This edition firmly establishes Nishtar-i ʿIshq as one of the last comprehensive achievements of Indo-Persian literary historiography.
