【Summary】

Shihāb al-Dīn Maḥmūd b. Aḥmad al-Zanjānī (573–656 A.H.) was an eminent Iranian jurist, lexicographer, Qurʾānic exegete, and traditionist, and a distinguished professor at the Niẓāmiyya and Mustanṣiriyya madrasas. He also served for a time as chief judge and supervisor of public endowments. His scholarly legacy includes important works in Qurʾānic exegesis, jurisprudence, legal theory, and Arabic lexicography.

According to medieval historical sources, al-Zanjānī was the first scholar to adopt a method of refining and abridging comprehensive dictionaries, thereby introducing a new approach to lexicographical composition. Tarwīḥ al-Arwāḥ fī Tahdhīb al-Ṣiḥāḥ represents a systematic refinement of al-Jawharī’s renowned dictionary al-Ṣiḥāḥ.

The present critical edition has been established on the basis of six manuscript copies, with careful comparison against the original text of al-Ṣiḥāḥ as well as later lexicons derived from it. The work remains an important reference for the history of Arabic lexicography and scholarly practices of textual condensation.
