【Summary】

Abū al-Wafāʾ al-Būzjānī was a renowned mathematician and astronomer of the Islamic world, born in Būzjān (near present-day Torbat-e Jām) during the Buyid period. After receiving his early education in mathematics and astronomy, he moved to Baghdad, where he became associated with the scientific circles of the Buyid court under ʿAḍud al-Dawla and his son Bahāʾ al-Dawla.

Kitāb al-Najjāra, composed at the request of Bahāʾ al-Dawla, is a seminal work on practical geometry and is regarded as one of al-Būzjānī’s scientific masterpieces. The treatise exerted a lasting influence on later mathematicians and generated several commentaries, including those by Ibn Yūnus al-Mawṣilī (in Arabic) and Mullā Muḥammad Bāqir Yazdī (in Persian).

In addition to these commentaries, two early Persian translations of the work are extant. One was produced by an anonymous translator, while the other was prepared by the ninth-century mathematician Abū Isḥāq Kūbnānī. The present edition is based on the anonymous Persian translation and is published together with a French translation, making this foundational text accessible to a wider scholarly audience.
