【Summary】
Rāshikāt al-Hind is a relatively short treatise, originally comprising about 15 folios, written by Abū Rayḥān al-Bīrūnī. It is the only surviving work by al-Bīrūnī devoted exclusively to arithmetic.
In this treatise, al-Bīrūnī first explains the concept of ratio and proportion based on Greek mathematics, particularly Euclid’s Elements. He then introduces more complex proportional systems involving up to 17 known quantities and records the specific terms used by Indian mathematicians to describe these relationships. The work offers valuable insight into the transmission and comparison of Greek and Indian mathematical traditions.
