【Summary】
Khāqānī Shirvānī, one of the greatest poets of the 6th century A.H., left behind three major independent works: his prose letters (Munshaʾāt), his Dīvān of poetry, and Tuḥfat al-ʿIrāqayn, the work presented here.
This long narrative poem, consisting of more than 3100 verses, was composed in 551 A.H. and dedicated to Jamāl al-Dīn al-Mawṣilī. In the poem, Khāqānī describes his journey to Iraq, undertaken in hopes of gaining access to the Seljuk court of Muḥammad b. Maḥmūd.
Beyond its value as a travel narrative, the work offers rich insights into Khāqānī’s poetic style, his cultural reflections, and his sharp observations of society, politics, and learning in the medieval Islamic world.
