【Summary】

This study investigates the artistic and cultural policies of Shāhrukh Timurid through an examination of manuscripts associated with his royal library. By compiling a systematic list of surviving books linked to Shāhrukh, the author seeks to clarify the ruler’s objectives in collecting, restoring, and commissioning manuscripts.

The manuscripts are classified into three categories:
(1) works produced elsewhere that merely bear Shāhrukh’s ownership seal;
(2) incomplete manuscripts copied in the eighth century A.H. and later completed in Shāhrukh’s library;
(3) manuscripts fully copied within Shāhrukh’s court.

Only eight illustrated manuscripts are known to have been produced or refurbished by Shāhrukh’s order. Four of these are incomplete copies of the Jāmiʿ al-Tawārīkh originally produced in the eighth century A.H. and later completed by Ḥāfiẓ Abrū. The remaining manuscripts include the Kulliyāt-i Tārīkhī of Ḥāfiẓ Abrū, a Miʿrājnāma, and two copies of Niẓāmī’s Khamsa.

Focusing on these eight illustrated manuscripts, the book traces their movements, interventions, and modifications, offering a detailed picture of artistic patronage, manuscript circulation, and visual culture at the Timurid court.
