A collected edition of the poems of Manṣūr of Shiraz, a fourteenth-century Persian poet and contemporary of Ḥāfiẓ, whose works reflect early Indo-Persian literary culture and lexicographical interests.
Manṣūr of Shiraz was a Persian poet and man of letters of the eighth century A.H. and a contemporary of Ḥāfiẓ. According to available evidence, he left Shiraz in his youth for India, where he spent most of his poetic career. His years in India coincided with the early development of Persian lexicography, a movement that profoundly influenced his poetic style.
Manṣūr showed a particular interest in rare, difficult, and archaic vocabulary—terms that later attracted the attention of Persian lexicographers. His poetry thus occupies an important place in the study of the history of the Persian language and Indo-Persian literary culture.
The present volume brings together Manṣūr Shīrāzī’s surviving poems, collected from early anthologies (jungs), biographical dictionaries (tadhkiras), and classical Persian lexicons. It is accompanied by an extensive introduction on the poet’s life and literary significance, as well as explanatory notes and indexes designed to assist researchers and specialists.
