【Summary】
Jumal al-Falsafah is a unique early encyclopedic work covering a wide range of sciences, completed in 529 A.H. by Muḥammad b. ʿAlī al-Hindī. Structured in seven treatises written in a question-and-answer format, it addresses philosophy, geometry, astronomy, music, logic, natural science, and metaphysics.
The fourth treatise is devoted entirely to music theory and constitutes one of the earliest systematic discussions of music in the Islamic intellectual tradition. The present volume offers a critical edition of this musical section along with a Persian translation. Owing to the exceptional importance of the work and the survival of the author’s autograph manuscript, a facsimile of the musical section is included at the end of the volume.
