【Summary】

ʿImād al-Dīn Maḥmūd Shīrāzī was among the most distinguished physicians of the 10th century A.H., notable for his commitment to composing medical works in Persian in order to disseminate scientific knowledge among Persian-speaking audiences without reliance on Arabic. He authored more than thirty books and treatises across medicine and related disciplines.

al-Tashrīḥ is his most substantial achievement and the largest anatomical work written in Persian from its time until the establishment of modern medical education. Its significance lies both in its encyclopedic scope and in its dedicated treatment of organ physiology (manāfiʿ al-aʿḍāʾ) alongside descriptive anatomy.

The work examines bones, cartilages, muscles, ligaments, and tendons, cranial and spinal nerves, arteries and veins, and explains the functional mechanisms of organs. For certain organs—most notably the eye—it also presents layered accounts of diseases. Organized into seven sections, the book covers: anatomy of the head and neck; thorax; back and abdomen; abdominal viscera; upper limbs; lower limbs; and joints, cartilage, skin, nails, and hair.
