【Summary】
Durrat al-Tāj li-Ghurrat al-Dubbāj is one of the most important works of Quṭb al-Dīn Shīrāzī (634–710 A.H.), composed in Persian as an encyclopedic exposition of practical and theoretical philosophy and written at the request of Dubbāj b. Fīlshāh b. Rustam b. Dubbāj, a ruler of Gilan, the work encompasses twelve sciences and is structured into a preface (fātiḥa), five main sections (jumal), and a conclusion.
The fourth section of the work is devoted to mathematics and is subdivided into four branches: (1) geometry, (2) cosmology and astronomy, (3) arithmetic (arithmāṭīqī), and (4) music. The present volume contains the arithmetic branch, corresponding to the third subdivision of the fourth section. Strongly influenced by Kitāb al-Shifāʾ of Ibn Sīnā, this section discusses the properties of numbers as quantities, numerical ratios and relationships, and the representation of numbers through figures and proportional schemes. It stands as a significant witness to the transmission of mathematical philosophy in the Persian intellectual tradition.
