【Summary】
Kūshyār ibn Labbān al-Jīlī was one of the most prominent Iranian mathematicians and astronomers of the fourth century A.H. He authored an important treatise on the astrolabe, one of the most widely used astronomical instruments in the Islamic world. The astrolabe served multiple scientific and practical purposes, including timekeeping, determining the positions of celestial bodies, calculating prayer times, finding the direction of the qibla, and supporting surveying and cartographic work.
Kūshyār originally composed his treatise in Arabic. The present volume provides a comprehensive scholarly presentation of the work, including high-quality reproductions of a rare early Persian manuscript translation, a critical edition of the Persian translation, an edited version of the original Arabic text, and a complete Japanese translation. This publication is a valuable resource for the study of Islamic astronomy, scientific instrumentation, and the transmission of scientific knowledge across linguistic and cultural boundaries.
