【Summary】
Rashīd al-Dīn Faḍl Allāh Hamadānī was one of the most eminent physicians, statesmen, and historians of the Ilkhanid period, serving as vizier under Ghāzān Khān, his successor Öljeitü, and during the early reign of Abū Saʿīd. Owing to his medical expertise, he gained access to the Ilkhanid court and rose to the highest administrative ranks through political acumen and scholarly authority.
Among his numerous works—spanning history, religious sciences such as Qurʾānic studies and jurisprudence, medicine, and political theory—Jāmiʿ al-Tavārīkh occupies a unique and unparalleled position. Although not authored solely by Rashīd al-Dīn himself, the work was compiled by a team of scholars and translators under his direct supervision.
The project initially began by order of Ghāzān Khān with the composition of a history of the Mongols, but Ghāzān’s death in 704 A.H. prevented its completion. The work was subsequently finalized under his brother and successor, Sultan Muḥammad Öljeitü, who later commissioned Rashīd al-Dīn to compose a universal history. This monumental undertaking was completed after nearly four decades of sustained effort.
The present volume contains the section devoted to the history of the Salghurid dynasty of Fars. It is published here for the first time on the basis of the most reliable manuscript witnesses and represents a significant contribution to the study of regional dynasties in medieval Iran.
