Original Title: ʿArafāt al-ʿĀshiqīn va ʿArṣāt al-ʿĀrifīn (8 vols.)
A monumental Safavid-era Persian biographical anthology documenting nearly 3,500 poets, from the origins of Persian poetry to the early seventeenth century, arranged in a highly systematic and generational structure.
ʿArafāt al-ʿĀshiqīn va ʿArṣāt al-ʿĀrifīn is among the most extensive and authoritative Persian tazkiras (biographical dictionaries of poets). It was compiled between 1022 and 1024 A.H. by the Safavid poet, scholar, and anthologist Taqī al-Dīn Muḥammad Awḥadī.
Written during the author’s residence in India at the Mughal court of Emperor Jahangir (r. 1014–1037 A.H.), the work preserves biographical notices and poetic selections for approximately 3,500 poets, spanning from the formative period of Persian poetry to Awḥadī’s own lifetime.
The anthology is methodically organized into 28 thematic “arenas” (ʿarṣa), each subdivided into three generational groups—early, middle, and later poets—making it an indispensable reference for the study of Persian literary history and poetic networks.
