【Summary】
Rashīd al-Dīn Faḍl Allāh Hamadānī was a prominent physician, scholar, and historian during the reigns of Ghāzān Khān and Öljaitü. Although this section of Jāmiʿ al-Tavārīkh was not written directly by him, it was compiled by a group of scholars and translators under his supervision. Commissioned by Öljaitü, the Jāmiʿ al-Tavārīkh was conceived as a universal history and completed after decades of work.
This volume contains the sections devoted to the history of the Franks, together with accounts of the Popes and Roman emperors, and represents one of the earliest Persian attempts at writing a global history of Europe. Rashīd al-Dīn’s broader intellectual legacy includes major contributions to history, religious sciences, medicine, and statecraft.
