“Toshihiko Izutsu’s Comparative Philosophy”
— A Conflict between the Social and the Divine —
Author: Bahman Zakipour
During his ten-year stay in Iran, Izutsu dedicated himself to the study of hikmah philosophy within the Twelve-Imam Shiites tradition and ‘Erfaan’ theosophy. And he merged and advanced these philosophies, and he successfully adapted the intricate philosophical issues within Twelve-Imam Shiites theology to modern contexts, earning him immense respect. However, upon returning to Japan after the 1979 Iranian Islamic Revolution, Izutsu’s activities in Iran remained relatively unknown.
This book represents the culmination of the author’s deep fascination with Izutsu’s academic work, upon coming to Japan, the author immersed himself in the study of Izutsu’s comparative philosophy. Drawing from the ideas of Michel Foucault’s “Knowledge of power and the power of knowledge ” and Edward Said’s “Orientalism”, the author conducts a thorough examination of Izutsu’s comparative philosophy.
